Red Deer Lookout (Mount Shem, Japheth and Ham in the distance)

On 19 August 2006, 7 members of BASQ surveyed 5 sites on Steve Irwin's property "Ironbark Station". The property is about 40 km north of Crows Nest, and houses sick and “retired” animals from Australia Zoo.

It was formerly used for cattle grazing, but most of the cattle have been removed. Habitats include open grassland, woodland, eucalypt plantations, dry sclerophyll forest and vine scrub. A number of dams have recently been added.

The property was first surveyed in September 2004, as part of the BA Congress and Campout. A total of 57 species were recorded. A repeat survey in April 2005 recorded 53 species. In this survey, the number of species was 60, a good result considering the drought and absence of summer migrants (though the first bee-eater was heard).
